New West Theatre, still singing after 23 successful seasons

Nothing short of countless hours of rehearsals, planning, promoting plus a little blood, sweat and tears goes into the production of a New West Theatre show.

New West Theatre, the only professional theatre company south of Calgary, will be wrapping up their 23rd season in March, but that doesn't mean a vacation for the hardworking and talented actors, technicians and other numerous behind-the-scenes crew.

The company also runs an extensive Summer Theatre Camp program and a year-round Theatre School. New West Theatre began its Theatre for Young Audiences productions in their 1996/1997 season and has since strived to expand its youth programming. Their Summer Theatre Camps, started in 2007, allow them to directly mentor young southern Albertans interested in theatre. The Theatre School opened last year and offers year round classes with confidence-building activities and an exploration of theatrical foundations. In the upcoming year, New West Theatre will be adding one week of school tours to their Theatre for Young Audiences Production as well as running their Theatre Camp and Theatre School out of G.S. Lakie's new convertible theatre space.

Annually, more than 20,000 patrons attend their productions, which is approximately 20% of Lethbridge's population. To keep their dedicated fans satisfied, New West Theatre Each produces six productions each season, three of which are Music-Comedy Revues, two Canadian plays and a Theatre for Young Audiences Production. Their last production of the season, An Almost Perfect Thing, will run from February 28 to March 9. Tickets can bepurchased online, by calling 403-329-SEAT (7328), or in person at either the Yates Memorial Centre (1002 - 4th Avenue South) or ENMAX Centre (2510 Scenic Drive South)

Like many theatre companies, New West Theatre is a non-profit organization and a registered charity. Ticket sales cover less than half of their production cost and, as a result, they rely on government grants, individual and corporate donations as well as corporate sponsorships.

Their shows attract tourists to the region, provide dynamic employment opportunities for artists and bring local residents to the downtown core. Donations and sponsorships can be made through the New West Theatre website or by calling Natascha Hainsworth, general manager, at 403-381-9378. They hope to further their reach into the downtown core by connecting and partnering with downtown businesses over the next year.

Next time you're looking for a night out, head for dinner and a show and take in the talented local actors with New West Theatre.
