Meet David - Our New Operations Coordinator

Posted on : Monday, August 01, 2022

David Velazquez was born in Panama in the year 2000. He moved to Calgary in 2011 before moving to Lethbridge in 2018 where he started his bachelor’s degree in General Management at the U of L. He played on the varsity soccer team throughout his first three years in Lethbridge with the majority of his time being taken up by his studies and commitment to the team.

In the summer of 2021, David started his position at the BRZ on the Marketing & Engagement Team, alongside three other summer ambassadors. According to David, this was a significant turning point in his Lethbridge experience, “Getting involved in the Downtown scene, meeting members of the community, and finding all my favorite places to eat and shop completely changed my personal experience of living in Lethbridge. It exposed me to so many amazing parts of this city that I’d been missing out on”.

Following the summer of 2021, the BRZ extended their student ambassador program throughout the fall and spring semesters. As a result, David was able to work part-time at the BRZ while finishing his studies and graduating in May 2022. This summer, with the completed construction and development of Festival Square, an opportunity arose for someone to assume the administrative responsibilities of the new space.

Meet our new Operations Coordinator: David Velazquez!

“I’m extremely motivated to do the best job I can do in this new position. I have really enjoyed my time at the BRZ and feel really fortunate to be able to contribute to the revitalization of Downtown that’s being led by the amazing business owners of this community, the city, those supporting local, and so many others.

This new position includes the management of the day-to-day operations of Festival Square, the coordination of event programming, and assisting in project development. “Some of the events we’ve gotten to see in Festival Square so far are free community yoga, the Downtown Farmers Market, and outdoor concerts. We’re real excited to see what other events will take place in Festival Square because the possibilities are endless”. Some events you can look forward to in this new public plaza include outdoor roller skating, Oktoberfest, and the Homenaje a la Carpa Mexicana.
