'Tee It Up' With J. Walker Golf

With a little over two months in its new location, J. Walker Golf has already begun to feel the support from the downtown community. The specialty golf store opened up shop on 9th Avenue South in 2012 before moving to the downtown.

Founder of J. Walker Golf, Josh Walker, left his Regina home in the year 2000 to attend Lethbridge College where he graduated from the Professional Golf program. In 2009, J. Walker Golf was established. Walker worked as the Head Golf Professional at the Magrath Golf Club for seven years. In December 2012, J. Walker Golf expanded its operation, opening up a year around golf shop on 9th Avenue South in Lethbridge, AB.

Walker grew up with a passion for the game. He could say it ran in the family. His Dad was a big golfer throughout Walker’s life. At the age of 10, Walker’s dad took him out for a round of golf, a pinnacle day for Walker as a boy. It ignited his passion for the game, which would eventually become his career.

After spending a little over three years at the shops first location in Lethbridge, Walker drew his attention to the cities downtown core. He had an idea downtown Lethbridge would be a better location, a thought he underestimated. The golf shop has been in its new downtown location since February of 2016 and it’s already exceeding Walker’s expectations.

“We are ecstatic about being downtown. We have great business neighbours. The support from the downtown business has been great. Everybody’s really friendly (and) is here to support each other.”

Moving to a bigger location has made room for a golf simulator, which allows anyone who visits the shop to practice their golf swing and try new equipment on an inside imitation golf course.

Customers are able to try equipment out before they buy it. They offer full fittings as well as lessons. The store also has men and women’s apparel, golf bags, clubs, shoes, grips and golf balls. You name it, they got it!

It’s not about making the sale at J. Walker Golf, it’s about the people.

“We hope that by them coming back all the time, we are giving them the right service. Always giving the time, the attention and the advice is the most important (to us),” says Walker.

Making their store as inviting and friendly as possible is a main priority. The Regina born Walker, stresses the importance of making any golfer feel like they belong.

“We want to be known as the golf shop for the golfer that doesn’t belong to a golf club,” says Walker.

It’s not about the money for this shop, it’s about making sure customers get what they need in order to play their best whether that is expert advice from staff or recommended products that best suits that individual.

“Reputation and word of mouth is everything, so we want to make sure our customers are treated fairly and are given the right advice and the right products that they need and not selling something that is not right for them.”

J. Walker Golf wants to help customers play their best and look their best.

So next time your downtown and you want to practice your golf swing or try out new clubs, stop by J. Walker Golf. You’re treated like a VIP the moment you step through the doors.
