A Flourish of Fans at Free Comic Book Day 2015

It’s not everyday, a comic book store gives out comics for free. With an international promotion for independent comic book stores, staff at Kapow Comics unboxed their free comics for that Free Comic Book Day (FCBD).

Kapow Comics store owner and manager, Wally Deruisseaux, opened up the store nearly four years ago. Being an avid comic fan himself, he knew there was a large comic book culture in Lethbridge. Three months after Kapow opened, Deruisseaux decided to take part in FCBD, a day dedicated to handing out special comics for free by independently owned comic stores across the world.

Having a store completely filled with comic book goers, Deruisseaux didn’t realize how many comic book fans there were in Lethbridge until he hosted his first FCBD.

“It was the busiest day we ever had, it wasn’t even matched until Christmas and Boxing day. I don’t think I ever left the cashier till that whole day. It was crazy busy,” says Deruisseaux of the 2014 FCBD.

Jumping ahead to 2015, Deruisseaux continued to invest more in the  preparations for FCBD by inviting special guests like Edmonton’s Missy Cosplay and local artist Natalie Asplund. Kapow also hosted costume contests for kids and adults. It’s not just FCBD that has Deruisseaux amazed at the comic book community here in Lethbridge but is impressed by the progression of business that Kapow is receiving on a daily basis.

FCBD is not solely about giving comic books out to people who walk into the store but donating back to the community. Each  year, Deruisseaux donates all the leftover comics to children in the Paediatric Unit in our local Hospital.

Pushing to make FCBD more popular and exciting every year, Deruisseaux will continue to observe what works and what doesn’t. Just recently, Deruisseaux decided to expand space by taking down the board game tables in the back of the store.

Deruisseaux will continue to make FCBD more and more exciting each and every year as comic book fans continue to grow in Lethbridge.

Free Comic Book Day occurs every year on the first Saturday of May, so don’t forget to mark your 2016 calendars!
